Reputation

When searching for a tradie your best bet is to start with recommendations from people you know and trust.

Getting referrals from people who have had a positive experience with trades will give you peace of mind when starting your exciting home build or renovation process.

Ask your friend or family member:

How was the quality of work?
Was the job completed within the agreed-upon timeframes?
Was the quality of work worth their price?

2. Licensing

The internet is a beautiful tool. Simply searching for your potential tradie on the Licenced Trades website immediately shows you whether or not they are licenced. A licenced tradie has the correct qualifications and registration to trade within their respective industry, which means you can rest easy knowing they will complete your job well. Should they fail to do that, you have a safety net in the Queensland Building Construction Commission (QBCC), which handles all construction industry disputes.

3. Insurance

Checking tradie’s insurance is just as important as checking their licencing. We advise not only confirming they have insurance but what type of insurance they have. As with all types of insurance, certain policy types determine how you and the trades are protected. If they hold Public Liability and Home Warranty insurance, rest assured your trade is looking out for both of you.

4. Quotes

We cannot stress this enough… get at least three quotes from different trades.

Even if you think you have decided on the best trade for your home project, it’s a good rule of thumb to confirm the tradie’s pricing is on par with their competition. That’s not to say if their quote is the most expensive, they are the best. But you want to ensure their price is reasonably close to the other quotes from their industry.

While on the subject of quotes, it is also important you understand what is included and excluded in the quote.

5. Written Proof

A written contract detailing and itemising all aspects of your project protects you should any issues occur throughout the process. A reliable tradie will be agreeable to a fixed-price contract, which ensures they will not draw out your project, allowing them to include additional costs.
