Directors Insights - 5 Tips To Avoid Price Shock When Renovating
Our clients can be very surprised at the cost of a large scale renovation or design project; we know that they aren’t trying to be cheap and unrealistic, they’re simply not used to shopping for quality materials the way that we are.
Here are a few tips for you to use to avoid being shocked when it comes to designing your space.
1. BUDGET WISELY
The reason for renovating your kitchen probably has something to do with a pain point or two with your current situation. It might be a need for more space, or it’s a need for an extension of the walk-in robe, aka the marriage saver. Whatever the reason (or reasons) is for renovating, be sure to write down and prioritize all of your remodelling goals. After going over your wants and needs, create a clear list of renovation goals to hand to contractors. Allow an extra 20% of your overall budget for additional costs that may pop up while the project is progressing. Unforeseen issues may need to be addressed on the go, and the plan to achieve your dream kitchen could go astray if you don’t have the financial flexibility to handle such a situation.
2. CONSIDER RETURN ON INVESTMENT
Aim on getting back the maximum return on investment. If you plan to stay in your place for five years or more, invest what you can afford for the look and upgrades you want. If you’re planning to sell, take a different approach.
3. DON’T COMPROMISE ON QUALITY
Avoid purchasing material goods that are manufactured poorly or have little-to-no durability. Whether it’s cabinetry, countertops, splashbacks or hardware, seek the products that are rated for high quality and endurance. Consult a kitchen design professional who can offer insight into quality products that will meet the needs of your remodel while staying within your budget. Rest assured, a smaller budget doesn’t mean you won’t have a kitchen that can stand the test of time.
4. TALK TO OTHERS
Talk about your renovation project with someone who has experienced it before. In addition to obtaining tips and knowledge on how to complete a successful kitchen renovation, you may also learn how to save on costs and budget appropriately for certain projects.
5. READ FEEDBACK AND REVIEWS BEFORE HIRING A CONTRACTOR FOR THE JOB
The best way to research what a company is like to work with is to hear it from their clients. Obviously, good reviews are a good start, but the not so good are critical as well. Look for a company that addresses issues or problems fairly and professionally because sometimes they do happen.
