Directors Insights - Tips For Choosing Your Kitchen Cabinet Handles

Kitchen cabinet handles may be small, but they can have a huge impact on the aesthetic and functionality of your kitchen.

For kitchen renovations and new home kitchen designs, it is always important to set your budget before deciding on your kitchen’s features.  But it’s important to understand handle pricing before you set your budget, so we have compiled a list of considerations for selecting the right cabinet handles for your kitchen.

Know Your Kitchen Style/Theme

It is very important to have a clear vision for your kitchen’s style. Retro? Hamptons?

Your cabinetry selections should be made before deciding on your kitchen cabinet handles, so you’ll know where they will be placed.

It is also important to acknowledge the purpose of the kitchen renovation or new design. Will this be an investment property or for you to rent out? Are you building/renovating to sell, or will this be your forever home?

If the kitchen is being designed for resale or to rent, selecting an understated or neutral kitchen feature is generally a good idea. But if this is your forever home, don’t be scared to go all out and commit to your chosen style.

Colour & Finish

As a rule of thumb when choosing your cabinet handle colours,  ensure they contrast your kitchen cabinets. I.e. Don’t have black handles with black cabinetry unless you are going for a blocked aesthetic.

Also, be aware of your kitchen’s appliance colouring. If you have chrome appliances, consider chrome handles. If you have stainless steel appliances, stainless steel, brushed nickel, or graphite nickel cabinet handles will go well in your kitchen.

When looking at the finish, you are considering the texture, durability of the handle, and appearance.

Kitchen cabinet handles are either electroplated or micronized.  An Electroplated handle has a strong and permanent bonding that will not be scratched off, unlike paint. A Microzined cabinet handle has the highest quality polish, creating a smooth, more corrosion-resistant handle.

REMINDER: There is no right or wrong colour combination it will always rely on your personal taste. But don’t forget to identify the purpose of the kitchen before deciding.

Shape Versus Size

To ensure comfort and convenience, focusing on functionality when selecting your kitchen cabinet handles is important. Generally, longer handles are easier to use and look great on cabinets, but they can be more expensive.

If you plan on opening the cabinets regularly, we suggest choosing handles that are simple in shape and make opening kitchen cabinets easy and painless.
